The political crisis surrounding Algeciras Mayor José Ignacio Landaluce has escalated, with Landaluce announcing his resignation effective October 25. This decision follows sexual assault and abuse allegations filed by two women and a significant political fracture within the Partido Popular (PP). Landaluce has denied all accusations, characterizing them as ‘absolutely and categorically false’ and part of an organized setup, specifically describing the situation as a ‘great setup.’ In a symbolic gesture, he stated his intention to hand over the mayoral baton to the Cristo de Medinaceli upon his departure. He has vowed to prove his innocence in court. On October 22, Landaluce appeared before the Women's Violence Court to testify as an investigated party regarding an alleged crime against sexual freedom. Following the hearing, he maintained his innocence, describing the proceedings as an ‘exhausting personal and political ordeal.’ The resignation comes as twelve municipal councilors broke ties with the mayor to support a motion of censure, a move also backed by four Vox councilors. The motion, which had gathered sufficient support to remove him from office, was scheduled for debate on October 28, with Jacinto Muñoz positioned as the candidate to succeed him. Despite the announced resignation, the scheduled motion of censure will proceed to formalize the leadership change. Landaluce intends to remain in office until the City Council officially acknowledges his resignation on October 28 to prevent a power vacuum. In response to the allegations, the PSOE has announced plans to propose an investigative commission within the Algeciras City Council to determine if public resources were used to conceal alleged sexual aggressions during Landaluce’s fifteen-year tenure. Following his resignation as Mayor and his departure from the Senate, the Spanish Supreme Court has transferred the criminal investigation to the courts in Algeciras.
