Algeria is engaging in high-level diplomacy to strengthen bilateral relations with both European and African partners. In late July, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed a strategic partnership focused on energy security, industrial cooperation, and the Italy-led ‘Mattei Plan’ for Africa. The leaders praised their “excellent” relations, particularly regarding gas supplies and infrastructure development. Diplomatic efforts have recently focused on normalizing relations with Mali. Following a telephone conversation on August 9, 2026, which signaled a mutual desire to prioritize dialogue and non-interference, Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga traveled to Algiers on August 24, 2026. Maïga arrived following an invitation from Algerian counterpart Sifi Ghrieb to deliver a formal message from Malian Transitional President Assimi Goïta to President Tebboune. This visit, which includes a scheduled audience with the Algerian President, aims to revitalize bilateral cooperation and establish a renewed partnership based on sovereignty and economic cooperation. The mission follows recent confidence-building measures, such as the reinstatement of ambassadors and the reopening of commercial airspace between the two nations, marking a strategic shift in the Bamako-Algiers axis after approximately 14 months of tension that began following a border incident involving a Malian drone. Furthermore, President Goïta has expressed agreement to conduct an official visit to Algeria in the near future, though a specific date has not yet been set.
