Overview
Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion has launched investigations into widespread irregularities within its digital import platform. Initially, authorities used artificial intelligence and automated data cross-referencing to identify over 1,000 economic operators submitting suspicious or identical documentation, including overlapping social security declarations, tax extracts, and balance sheets.
The investigation expanded as officials identified highly disproportionate import requests from micro-enterprises. Analysis revealed that 3,961 micro-enterprises, many with very few employees, requested import programs totaling $130.32 billion. Minister Kamel Rezig noted these requests significantly exceed Algeria’s historical annual import value of approximately $70 billion. The ministry is currently verifying these files to ensure declared volumes align with the actual economic capacity of the businesses involved.
