Algeria regional and international diplomatic tensions

Algeria's diplomatic relations with various nations and its regional posture have faced significant friction involving the Western Sahara dispute and border security.

Diplomatic tensions escalated with France following Paris's support for Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. In response, Algeria recalled its ambassador from Paris and took actions involving the detention of staff and writers. Concurrently, Tunisia rejected claims by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune regarding the link between Algerian and Tunisian security, asserting its status as an independent state.

Further regional instability emerged as reports indicated Algeria was escorting Sub-Saharan migrants toward the Moroccan border, a move interpreted as political pressure related to the Western Sahara rivalry. During this period, the Polisario Front also criticized Colombia for recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the territory, maintaining that the status of Western Sahara must be decided through self-determination.

Recent developments highlight the enduring nature of the Morocco-Algeria rivalry, which intensified following Spain’s 2022 support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal for Western Sahara. In July 2026, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieba in an attempt to resolve the diplomatic crisis and redefine bilateral relations.

Amidst these shifts, concerns were raised regarding whether Morocco might utilize migration as a tool of pressure. However, Moroccan Ministry of Interior spokesperson Rachid El Khalfi denied these accusations, attributing recent border tensions in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta to social media misinformation and misinterpretations of Spanish Supreme Court rulings, rather than intentional provocation.
