Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is scheduled to make a state visit to Spain in October 2026 following an invitation from King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. This visit, the first by an Algerian head of state to Spain in 16 years, aims to normalize bilateral relations following a period of tension that began in 2022. In late September 2026, diplomatic preparations advanced through a session of political consultations in Madrid. Co-chaired by Lounès Magramane, Secretary General of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Spanish counterpart Diego Martinez Belío, the meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming 8th High-Level Meeting. The delegations reviewed draft agreements and memorandums of understanding intended for signature during the summit to consolidate cooperation and identify new partnership axes. Economic cooperation remains a central pillar of the rapprochement. Both parties noted growth in trade and emphasized the need to strengthen productive investment in Algeria, specifically highlighting opportunities within the Algerian market and the provisions of its new investment law. The summit is expected to include a High-Level Meeting where Tebboune will co-preside alongside Sánchez. Key address key areas of cooperation include including energy, security, and migration. Regarding energy, Algeria has agreed migration, with previous agreements already set to increase gas exports via the Medgaz pipeline by approximately 10% and double liquefied natural gas tanker shipments. The diplomatic rapprochement occurs amid regional tensions in the Maghreb and a shift in Spain’s regional realignments.
