Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has continued a series of domestic policy and economic reforms focused on administrative restructuring, trade regulation, and infrastructure development. To manage the recent expansion of the country to 69 provinces, the President signed a decree implementing a significant administrative reshuffle under Article 92 of the Constitution. In economic matters, the President has defended the Provisional Import Program (PPI) to rationalize imports and control foreign currency. To reduce hydrocarbon dependence, the government is targeting strategic sectors including mining, the automotive industry, and the local manufacturing of electronic chips, aiming for at least $50 billion in annual foreign currency income. Algeria projects annual growth between 4.01% and 4.02%, with a goal of reaching a GDP of $400 billion by late 2026 or early 2027. Recent efforts to overhaul the investment landscape include directives to make a “single window” for investment fully operational by late September to simplify procedures and reduce delays. To support this, the President ordered a national census of industrial land to eliminate speculation and called for the accelerated digitalization of the investment chain. Structural changes also include specializing the Port of Mostaganem to handle imports exclusively for public sector organizations. To combat price speculation and protect consumer purchasing power, the President has ordered the drafting of legal texts to regulate intermediaries and resellers. The Ministry of Commerce is tasked with capping profit margins for essential goods like vegetables, legumes, pasta, and meat, while doubling field inspection teams. Additionally, a digital database will be created to provide real-time monitoring of price spikes. The Ministry of the Interior will also coordinate with regional governors to purchase and store local production surpluses to stabilize the supply of essential goods.
