Algerian scientific research and innovation development

Overview

Algeria is expanding its scientific research and technological innovation ecosystem through increased government investment and academic support.

In October 2026, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced the allocation of approximately 1.188 billion Algerian dinars to fund 937 innovative projects selected through the “ProtoMarket 2” national challenge. These projects, which include digital applications, artificial intelligence, and electronic equipment, aim to help students and graduates transform ideas into marketable prototypes and startups.

This push for innovation coincides with a rise in Algeria’s scientific influence in the 2026 Stanford-Elsevier rankings. The number of recognized researchers for annual impact rose to 101, while those recognized for long-term career impact increased to 45. To support this growth, the government has doubled the research budget and established numerous incubators and entrepreneurship centers on university campuses. Long-term national goals include reaching 20,000 startups by 2029 and training 30,000 AI engineers by 2030.
