Algerian weightlifting success at regional championships and hosting prospects

The Algerian national weightlifting team has demonstrated significant success at the combined African and Arab Championships held in Mostaganem. Early reports indicated the delegation had amassed 67 medals, including 15 golds, following strong performances by athletes such as Akram Chekhchoukh and Islam Touiri. As the competition progressed, the Algerian team’s total medal count rose to over 100, consisting of 34 gold, 13 silver, and 44 bronze medals. Notable achievements included Amina Yahia Mamoun setting a new continental record in the clean and jerk with a lift of 104 kg in the junior category (over 86 kg). Other significant contributors to the medal tally included Douaa Bouabdallah and Amine Messaour. By the conclusion of the championships, which featured approximately 340 athletes from 29 countries, the Algerian delegation secured a final total of 122 medals: 47 gold, 22 silver, and 53 bronze. The Algerian senior team was also crowned Arab champions. Following the event, the Algerian Weightlifting Federation (FAH) held a national technical college meeting in Mostaganem to coordinate the upcoming sports season. Khaled Mehalhel, president of the African Weightlifting Confederation, praised the organizational efforts and resources provided by Algerian authorities. As a result, the Confederation is considering requesting that Algeria host next year’s Senior African Championships, which will function as a qualifying event for the World Championships.
