Alibaba DAMO Academy medical AI developments

Overview

Alibaba’s research division, DAMO Academy, has released advanced artificial intelligence models designed to enhance medical imaging diagnostics through CT scan analysis.

Initially, the academy open-sourced ‘Damo Radar,’ a vision-language model capable of identifying approximately 146 to 150 clinical findings across 18 abdominal organs. In evaluations of nearly 40,000 examinations, the model’s average performance exceeded that of 23 out of 26 participating radiologists, contributing to a 10% reduction in missed diagnoses and a 30% reduction in diagnosis time.

Following this, the academy unveiled ‘DAMO EAGLE,’ a model specifically designed for non-invasive esophageal cancer screening using plain CT scans. Developed in collaboration with several medical institutions, the model can identify early-stage and precancerous lesions without endoscopy or contrast agents. Validated on over 80,000 cases, the model demonstrated a 90% sensitivity for esophageal cancer and a 99.2% specificity, aiming to integrate into existing lung cancer screening workflows to improve early detection rates.
