The documentary ‘La superviviente’ (The Survivor), directed by Kike Maíllo, examines the life of Alicia Esteve Head, a woman from Barcelona who impersonated a 9/11 survivor. Using the pseudonym Tania Head, she claimed to have escaped the 78th floor of the South Tower and lost her fiancé fiancé, David Scott Suárez, in the attacks. Her deception was successful enough to lead her to the presidency of the World Trade Center Survivors’ Network. Network and allow her to meet high-profile figures, including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Following a 2007 investigation by The New York Times, it was revealed that Head had never been inside the Twin Towers and had fabricated details regarding her education at Harvard and Stanford, as well as her employment at Merrill Lynch. The film utilizes actress Hannah Becker to portray Alicia, as Esteve declined to participate in the documentary. The production uses therapy recordings and writings to reconstruct the truth, creating a “hall of mirrors” to reflect the protagonist’s method of identity construction. The production film seeks to explore the psychological motivations behind the lie and the moral ambiguity of a woman who provided personal financial contributions and institutional work to the survivors' association while living under a false persona.
