The rivalry between Brazilian hurdler Alison dos Santos and Norwegian Karsten Warholm has intensified in the 400m hurdles. During a Diamond League meeting in Silesia, Poland, dos Santos secured a victory with a world-leading time of 46.43 seconds, defeating Warholm, who finished second in 46.52 seconds. This result marked Warholm’s third consecutive loss to dos Santos. By the 2026 season, dos Santos, also known as ‘Piu’, established dominance by breaking the world record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 45.80 seconds in Zurich on August 27. This achievement made him the first Brazilian to break a track athletics world record in 28 years, surpassing Warholm’s previous mark of 45.94 seconds. He maintained an undefeated streak throughout the 2026 circuit, winning stages in Xiamen, Stockholm, Oslo, Silesia, and Zurich. Dos Santos secured his third Diamond League championship at the final in Brussels, Belgium, finishing in 46.70 seconds. Karsten Warholm was absent from the final, reportedly due to financial disagreements with organizers. Following his record-breaking performance in Zurich, dos Santos continued his momentum at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate championship in Budapest. He won the title with a time of 45.98 seconds, finishing ahead of American Rai Benjamin, who clocked 46.40 seconds, and Karsten Warholm, who finished in 46.78 seconds. This victory, which stands as the third-fastest time in history, extended his undefeated season to nine titles and made him the first man to run the 400m hurdles in under 46 seconds on two separate occasions. Following this historic season, dos Santos has been nominated for the World Athletics Athlete of the Year award. ~~The final three candidates for the award will be determined by expert~~ He is among ten male nominees, competing alongside athletes such as Mondo Duplantis and ~~public votes, with the ceremony scheduled for November 29 in Monaco.~~ Sebastian Sawe.
