Alleged Sebin surveillance and harassment in Venezuela

Overview

Political figures and their families in Venezuela have reported various forms of harassment and surveillance attributed to the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) and other state security forces.

In August, political leaders Richard Blanco and Carlos Azuaje reported being monitored and followed by Sebin agents during travels in Trujillo and Monagas states. Blanco, president of Alianza Bravo Pueblo, noted that surveillance occurred during his tour of Valera and called for the release of political prisoners.

By September, reports expanded to include the family of former Torres municipality mayor Javier Oropeza. Following Oropeza’s detention by the National Bolivarian Police Intelligence Directorate (DIE-PNB), his sister, María Yolanda Oropeza, alleged physical injuries during encounters with agents and requested intervention from international human rights organizations and U.S. officials.
