Following the 2026 presidential elections, investigations were launched into audio recordings suggesting threats to poison the water supply of Guarani Kaiowá indigenous communities in Tacuru, Mato Grosso do Sul. In response to recordings where individuals allegedly suggested placing poison in the water supplying Sossoró village, Mayor Rogério Torquetti initiated an administrative procedure to suspend a municipal employee. The mayor previously described the incident as a “misunderstanding” caused by post-election euphoria and alcohol, but confirmed the individuals are prohibited from entering indigenous communities. Recent developments indicate that two municipal employees have reportedly confessed to the Federal Police following the emergence of the audio recordings. These employees have since been suspended from their duties. In Jaguapiré village, Tacuru, the home of 90-year-old healer Ñandesy Roberta was destroyed by a criminal fire, an act Apib describes as a violation of indigenous rights and religious freedom due to the destruction of sacred ritual instruments. Federal deputies Sônia Guajajara and Célia Xakriabá have filed urgent requests with the Ministries of Justice and Indigenous Peoples, the Federal Public Ministry, and the Superior Electoral Court, demanding accountability. In response to the escalating situation, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ordered a ministerial delegation to visit affected territories. To protect Guarani Kaiowá communities, the federal government has expanded the presence of the National Force in Mato Grosso do Sul. Minister of Justice Wellington César Lima e Silva announced the deployment of 145 agents to the Sassoró, Taquaperi, and Limão Verde villages. The National Force will implement a “Minuto a Minuto” (Minute by Minute) protocol, ensuring teams are ready for immediate deployment. Additionally, the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib) has recorded over 30 cases of violence against indigenous communities in the post-election period.
