Allianz increases ownership of PIMCO
Overview
In late July 2026, Allianz exercised its contractual right to terminate PIMCO’s employee‑participation plan and repurchased the outstanding “M‑Units” for roughly €1.4 billion. The buyback lifted Allianz’s holding from about 90.6 % to roughly 95 % of the bond‑specialist subsidiary, while current employees could keep their units until they left the firm and former employees retained a 4.4 % share.
A few days later, in early August, Allianz completed the purchase of the remaining employee‑held shares, acquiring the final 4.4 % stake for at least €1.4 billion. This transaction gave the Munich‑based insurer near‑full control of PIMCO and formally ended the M‑Unit programme that had been in place since 2008. Analysts described the price as fair and a pleasant surprise, and the market reaction was muted, with Allianz shares holding near their 52‑week high.
