Alpine sustainable forestry and reforestation efforts
Overview
Alpine regions are implementing various strategies to manage forests and promote sustainable timber use in response to climate-driven challenges.
In Austria and Italy, research emphasizes balancing biodiversity with forest requirements to combat rising temperatures and droughts. In South Tyrol, the regional government has doubled funding for timber construction to 2.4 million euros annually, expanding eligibility to private entities and non-profit housing to encourage carbon storage through wood usage.
In East Tyrol, reforestation efforts are addressing damage to approximately 13,000 hectares caused by windthrow, snow pressure, and bark beetle infestations. Between 2020 and 2025, roughly 6.5 million new trees were planted to create climate-resilient mixed stands. This initiative has been supported by approximately 38 million euros in subsidies since 2019.
