Amazon is expanding its low-emission delivery network across Italy by implementing micromobility hubs in several cities. The initiative utilizes small electric vehicles and scooters to navigate restricted traffic zones (ZTL) and narrow streets in historic urban centers, aiming to reduce noise, traffic congestion, and emissions. Following the introduction of hubs in Terni and Cagliari, the company expanded the service to Lecce, Lucca, Palermo, and Salerno, bringing the total number of Italian cities utilizing this model to 14. Additionally, same-day delivery services using small electric vehicles have been extended to Verona and Bologna. A study commissioned by Amazon suggests that Italy’s heavy electric vehicle fleet could grow from a projected 227 units in 2026 to nearly 3,000 by 2030, provided regulatory and infrastructural conditions remain favorable. Economic data indicates that electric vehicle users in Italy can achieve significant savings in fuel costs and total cost of ownership compared to gasoline or diesel vehicles. By September 2026, Italy’s broader energy and mobility landscape showed signs of significant transition. National electricity demand reached 27.8 TWh, a 6.5% annual increase, driven by the integration of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and other electrification efforts. While electric vehicles offer potential annual savings of over €850, many metropolitan families still face an indirect ‘local petrol tax’ of approximately €600 per year due to a heavy reliance on private vehicles caused by insufficient public transport.
