Amazon pre‑Columbian infrastructure revealed by LiDAR

Airborne LiDAR surveys have begun to overturn the long‑standing view of the Amazon as a sparsely populated wilderness. A study in Colombia’s Amazon rainforest mapped an extensive network of straight, elevated roads, platforms, ceremonial mounds and other constructions that linked settlements, agricultural zones and religious sites, indicating sophisticated planning and regional integration among pre‑Hispanic peoples.

Later that same day, a separate LiDAR project covering over 4,400 km in Brazil’s Acre and Amazonas states disclosed a far larger pre‑Columbian civilization. Researchers identified hundreds of earthworks—including geometric ditches, embankments and ceremonial enclosures—spread across an area comparable to a small country, suggesting a population of up to three million at its peak. The Brazilian findings extend the Colombian evidence, confirming that complex engineering, agriculture and social organization were widespread throughout the Amazon basin.

Together, these discoveries demonstrate that the Amazon once supported extensive, organized societies with impressive landscape modification, prompting a major reassessment of the region’s archaeological record and historical ecology.
