Overview

Parallel to the climate emergency, human rights advocates are seeking international intervention regarding the Rio Abacaxis massacre. Human Rights Watch has appealed to the United Nations and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to demand accountability for a 2020 police operation in the Abacaxis and Mari-Mari river territories, which involved reports of deaths, torture, and disappearances. Advocates note that no authorities have been held responsible for these crimes to date.
