Between 24 June and 31 July 2026, fifteen to sixteen elephants died in Kenya’s Amboseli‑Kimana ecosystem, most of them adult females and their calves. Affected animals showed weakness, partial hind‑limb paralysis and breathing difficulty before collapsing within one to two days. Post‑mortem examinations repeatedly found tomatoes – and in some cases watermelons – in the stomachs, and laboratory analysis by the University of Nairobi confirmed cyanide residues. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has expanded its inquiry, deploying veterinary and scientific teams from Nairobi, Tsavo and Amboseli, and collecting extensive environmental samples. KWS has asked the Pest Control Products Board to head a multi‑agency technical team to determine whether pesticide‑treated crops, runoff, or contaminated water and soil caused the poisoning. Investigators are also assessing whether the cyanogenic plant giant star grass could have contributed. Local farmer Elvis Muchai, a long‑time tomato grower, disputes any link to farm chemicals, noting that elephants frequently raid crops and cause losses. KWS Director General Prof. Erastus Kanga reiterated the agency’s commitment to establishing the facts and keeping the public informed. The incident occurs as Kenya’s elephant population, recently rebuilt to over 36,000, faces a notable setback in human‑wildlife coexistence. While no immediate human health risk has been identified, officials warn that cyanide runoff could threaten livestock and underscore broader concerns about pesticide regulation and agro‑chemical contamination near wildlife corridors. By early August, KWS had intensified ranger patrols and veterinary monitoring across the Amboseli‑Kimana area. Confirmatory laboratory testing on tissue samples is ongoing, and the multi‑agency technical team continues to examine possible contamination from pesticide use, storage, or disposal, as well as the role of the cyanogenic grass Cynodon plectostachyus. Authorities maintain that the investigation is active and will update the public as results become available.
