AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron has entered a public dispute with Robinhood regarding the platform’s offering of tokenized AMC stock. Aron characterized the unregistered blockchain-based products as “contemptible, outrageous, disgusting, detestable, inexcusable, vile,” and stated that AMC has no affiliation with the tokens. He expressed concerns that these synthetic markets could mislead investors and interfere with the company’s ability to raise capital. Robinhood has rejected demands to halt trading of the tokens. The company maintains that the products are legitimate, explaining that the Stock Tokens are tokenized debt securities issued by an offshore affiliate, Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited. These instruments provide economic exposure to the underlying stock price without granting legal ownership, voting rights, or beneficial interest in AMC. Robinhood noted that the tokens are designed to comply with specific regulatory frameworks, such as Regulation S, and are unavailable to investors in the United States, Canada, the UK, and Switzerland. As the conflict persists, Robinhood’s legal leadership has challenged AMC to present a formal case to cease trading. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has further defended the products, arguing that companies should not possess “automatic veto power over financial products that reference their shares.” Tenev clarified that the tokens are backed 1:1 by underlying shares held with custodian Alpaca Securities LLC, offering dividend-linked reinvestment benefits despite the lack of legal ownership. The dispute has also triggered speculative activity in the cryptocurrency market, including the rapid rise of a meme coin linked to the controversy.
