American Airlines has announced plans to discontinue several specific routes as part of a strategic network evaluation scheduled for 2027. The planned terminations include two international routes from Miami to Tulum, Mexico, and Miami to Montreal, Canada, both set to end on January 5, 2027. The airline also intends to end the Phoenix to Provo, Utah, service on January 5, and the Chicago O'Hare to Lincoln, Nebraska, route on April 5. A seasonal service from Dallas/Fort Worth to Albany, New York, had already concluded its final operations on September 7, 2026. A company spokesperson indicated these adjustments aim to enhance reliability and serve destinations “most valued by customers.” The decision to end the Miami to Tulum route follows a reported 33.2% decrease in passenger traffic at Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport during the first half of 2026. Regarding the Tulum service, the airline will maintain its connection between Dallas-Fort Worth and Tulum but will transition to using Embraer 175 regional jets, representing a significant reduction in capacity compared to the Boeing 737-800 aircraft previously utilized. This follows the cancellation of the Los Angeles to Tulum route and the prior discontinuation of the Charlotte connection. In addition to route reductions, the airline is undergoing technological and organizational shifts. Starting in early 2027, American Airlines plans to equip its mainline fleet of over 1,030 Airbus and Boeing aircraft with high-speed Starlink satellite Wi-Fi, targeting speeds up to 1 Gbps. The carrier is also discontinuing flights to Doha, Qatar, and terminating routes in Santa Maria, California, and Tijuana, Mexico. Furthermore, the airline will close its local office in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to centralize services, while reporting that Brian Znotins, Senior Vice President of Network Planning, has left the company.
