Americas migrant smuggling enforcement

Efforts to combat migrant smuggling networks in the Americas have expanded from regional cooperation and criminal prosecutions to include maritime interdictions and financial sanctions.

Initial developments focused on international cooperation to establish safe migration routes and the prosecution of smuggling rings. This included the conviction of individuals involved in moving migrants from Canada into the United States and the promotion of organized migration pilot schemes between Costa Rica and El Salvador. The International Organization for Migration noted that at least 11,492 migrants have died or disappeared on various regional routes.

Subsequent actions have intensified through maritime enforcement and financial crackdowns. The U.S. Coast Guard has conducted interdictions near San Diego, while new financial regulations require institutions to report transfers of $2,000 or more linked to undocumented movement. Authorities have also targeted the funding of smuggling operations, such as the Cancun-based Bhardwaj Organization, by freezing millions in assets to treat human smuggling with the same severity as terrorism and narcotics trafficking.
