Unrest occurred in the Floradorp district of Amsterdam-Noord following Mayor Femke Halsema’s decision to reject a residents' proposal for an alternative New Year’s Eve bonfire. The rejection followed safety advice from the fire department, which deemed the residents' plan to use an open container too dangerous for a residential area. During the disturbances on Sneeuwbalstraat, groups of residents set fire to waste and underground containers. Emergency services and police were met with attacks involving stones, bottles, and fireworks. Arrests were made in connection with the violence, including a 39-year-old man suspected of throwing fireworks at officers and a 14-year-old boy charged with public violence. As the situation escalated, the police deployed the Mobile Unit to restore order following renewed incidents of vandalism, barricades, and confrontations. In response to the recurring instability, authorities have increased their presence in the neighborhood through the deployment of neighborhood officers and youth workers to foster community relations and prevent further violence.
