Hans S. sentenced to life for 1994 Amy Lopez murder

The 1994 murder of Amy Lopez, a 24-year-old American tourist in Koblenz, Germany, has reached a legal conclusion following a breakthrough in DNA analysis. Lopez was found dead near the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in September 1994 after being lured to a room under false pretenses, where she was sexually assaulted and killed.

In early 2026, investigators used modern DNA technology to match traces on Lopez’s clothing to Hans S., an 81-year-old man. His profile was already in a police database due to a 1999 conviction for attempted rape. Following a saliva sample match in January 2026, the suspect was arrested at a nursing home.

During his trial at the Koblenz District Court, the defendant confessed to the murder and sexual assault. Prosecutors detailed that he bound Lopez with handcuffs, sexually assaulted her, and killed her through strangulation, striking her with a stone, and multiple stab wounds. While the defendant admitted to the crime, his lawyer noted he had “gaps in his memory regarding the specific sequence of events.”

On August 28, 2026, the court sentenced Hans S. to life imprisonment.
