NetEase Games and developer Naked Rain have announced that the urban open-world RPG ANANTA, formerly known as Project Mugen, is scheduled for a worldwide release on January 15, 2027. The free-to-play title will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and mobile platforms including iOS and Android. Set in modern metropolitan environments inspired by cities such as Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Tokyo, the game features an anime-inspired aesthetic. Gameplay focuses on social influence, allowing players to assume roles like hackers or influencers. Exploration mechanics include high-mobility options such as motorcycles, helicopters, and hang gliders, paired with a martial arts combat system. New details indicate a high degree of freedom within these environments, ranging from stealth and dynamic escape sequences to peaceful exploration of rural areas like Longxi Village, which includes cultural activities such as tea cultivation mini-games. The setting draws inspiration from specific landmarks, including Shanghai’s Pearl Tower and Hangzhou’s West Lake. During an interview at gamescom 2026, developer Tian Yu clarified that the game will not utilize a character gacha system. This design choice aims to ensure accessibility and maintain story integrity by allowing characters to be earned through gameplay, while focusing monetization on cosmetic items that do not impact gameplay balance. As of late August 2026, the game has surpassed 17 million pre-registrations across 110 countries and regions. Recent updates specify that the game will feature two distinct metropolitan locations: the modern Nova City and the mysterious Chongxiao. Developers have expressed ambitious long-term goals, aiming to provide approximately 100 hours of content at launch and committing to support the game with continuous updates, including new quests, characters, and maps, for at least seven years following its release.
