Ancient Syracuse gold coin discovery in Sicily

Overview

Archaeologists conducting excavations at the Maddalusa Necropolis near Agrigento, Sicily, discovered a well-preserved 5th-century BCE gold coin from ancient Syracuse. The coin was found within a ‘cappuccina’ type Greek tomb located in the coastal dunes west of the Akragas river.

The artifact features the head of Hercules on the obverse and a female head with the legend ‘Syra’ on the reverse. Experts note the coin dates to a period of intense military conflict when Syracuse and Akragas allied to resist Carthaginian expansion. Such gold was minted specifically to finance these war efforts. The discovery provides further insight into the economic and political conditions of the region prior to the Carthaginian occupation of Akragas in 406 BCE.
