The Caminata de las Warmis, a group of Andean women from the Jujuy province, began a march on August 3 from Pozo Rinconada to Buenos Aires to protest land dispossession and environmental degradation caused by extractivism. As the march progressed through provinces including Córdoba and Rosario, participants highlighted the contamination of the Pozuelo Lagoon, an international biosphere reserve, and lead contamination in Abra Pampa linked to the Pan de Azúcar mine. Upon reaching Buenos Aires, the activists reported that the Laguna de Pozuelos biosphere reserve is ‘totally dry’ due to drought and intensive water and energy consumption by mining operations. The group is seeking meetings with legislators to demand protection for their lands, water, and biodiversity, specifically citing concerns over 175 pending mining claims in the basin and the impact of the Chinchillas mine on local water supplies. Having completed the nearly 2,000-kilometer journey, members of the Mapuche and Kolla communities marched through the Once neighborhood toward the National Congress. The protesters delivered a formal petition to the President and lawmakers, demanding action against the Regime of Incentives for Large Investments (RIGI) and other legislative projects they argue promote ‘predatory extractivism’. The movement characterizes the situation as a ‘humanitarian crisis’ affecting indigenous peoples due to territorial dispossession and environmental damage.
