The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) has been managing preparations for upcoming local body elections. Initially, the Commission addressed misinformation regarding a purported two-month delay, dismissing such reports as “false and unauthenticated” and filing complaints with cyber crime police regarding the use of tampered letterheads. To ensure free and fair elections, State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha implemented a Model Code of Conduct. This code prohibits ministers and authorities from announcing new financial schemes, sanctioning grants, or making ad hoc appointments. It also bars political activities that aggravate communal, religious, or linguistic differences. To maintain order, the SEC mandated the installation of CCTV cameras at nomination centers, limited personnel during filing, and established regulations regarding loudspeaker use, liquor distribution, and candidate expenditure accounts. Punetha warned that officials found negligent in maintaining law and order or managing the nomination process would face disciplinary actions, including suspension and transfer. In recent administrative reviews, Commissioner Punetha held high-level video conferences with district collectors, police commissioners, and election observers to ensure transparency and accountability. Security coordination has been further reinforced through regular teleconferences between the Director General of Police and local authorities. On October 21, the SEC suspended the election process for all 100 urban local bodies, including 13 municipal corporations and 87 municipalities and nagar panchayats. This halt follows a Supreme Court directive issued after the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) alleged that candidates faced violence, threats, and intimidation while attempting to file nominations. The Court ordered the SEC to postpone the publication of the final candidate list until October 25 and to examine evidence regarding these claims. In compliance, Punetha extended the nomination process by 48 hours for the Kadapa Municipal Corporation, Rajampet Municipality, Mydukuru Municipality, and Tirupati Municipal Corporation. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) accused the YSRCP of attempting to obstruct the process through conspiracies. Following allegations of misconduct, the SEC ordered the removal of three police officers from regular and election-related duties.
