The YSRCP opposition in Andhra Pradesh has leveled several accusations against Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s administration, focusing on both governance and a worsening environmental crisis. Initially, YSRCP leaders accused the Chief Minister of misusing an official conference for Collectors and SPs to vent personal frustrations and pressure officials to favor NDA leaders. The party alleged that the administration is targeting specific officials and mishandling appointments, describing these actions as an “attack on constitutional governance.” As the situation progressed, the political focus intensified on a severe drought crisis. YSRCP President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy reported a rainfall deficit of over 51 percent since the start of the Kharif season, noting that approximately 628 of the state’s 688 mandals are facing drought-like conditions. He highlighted that nearly 20 lakh acres remain unsown and criticized the government for failing to declare drought-hit areas, provide alternative seeds, or supply fodder. Furthermore, he alleged that water from Srisailam is being prioritized for power generation instead of being supplied to the Rayalaseema region. In response, Chief Minister Naidu attributed the water shortages largely to Super El Niño conditions. He directed officials to scientifically assess the situation, setting an October 1 deadline to declare affected mandals. Preliminary government assessments indicate drought-like conditions in 513 mandals, with 268 classified as severe. To mitigate the crisis, the administration has allocated Rs 190 crore to protect horticultural crops and is promoting long-term infrastructure, such as the Polavaram project and river-linking initiatives, to address domestic and industrial water needs. Recent developments show the state continues to manage a 50.7 per cent rainfall deficit. To address the agricultural threat, the government is implementing action plans to support farmers, ensure crop insurance payouts, and control the prices of essential commodities such as rice and onions.
