Andhra Pradesh water infrastructure and funding initiatives
Overview
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has proposed interlinking the Godavari and Cauvery rivers to mitigate drought conditions in southern Indian states. He suggested that utilizing Godavari floodwater could specifically benefit the Rayalaseema region.
To support water security, Naidu announced the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 – Amarajeevi Jaladhara’ programme, which aims to provide tap water connections to 3.30 crore people with an outlay of Rs 30,136 crore. He also committed to launching 36 irrigation projects valued at Rs 35,000 crore over the next three years, emphasizing the completion of the Polavaram project.
Following these announcements, Naidu met with Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil in New Delhi to advocate for the timely release of central funds for the Polavaram project and the Jal Jeevan Mission. During the meeting, the Chief Minister also addressed inter-state challenges involving Odisha and Chhattisgarh, requesting the withdrawal of a ‘Stop Work Order’ from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change regarding protective embankments. He proposed a meeting between the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, chaired by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, to resolve these issues.
Expanding these efforts, Naidu met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss broader state development. He reiterated requests for central support for the Polavaram Project and river-linking initiatives to benefit Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Beyond water infrastructure, Naidu sought approval for the Vishakhapatnam Metro Rail Project and beach corridor projects. To combat drought-like conditions linked to El Niño, he requested special central financial assistance and discussed the Rayalaseema Global Horticulture Hub. Additionally, he requested funding for the Godavari Pushkaram celebrations scheduled for 2027.
