André Janones Janones' role in Lula da Silva campaign

André Janones, a federal deputy and key digital strategist for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s reelection campaign, was hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Hospital Vila Nova Star in São Paulo on October 19. His hospitalization for cardiac arrhythmia followed a presidential debate between Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro. Medical professionals attributed the arrhythmia to stress, poor nutrition, and sleep deprivation resulting from the election campaign. Janones was discharged on October 20 and expressed intentions to immediately resume his campaign duties. Lula da Silva publicly expressed support for Janones following his recovery. Following the election, Janones has been credited as a central figure in Lula da Silva’s victory. Although not a member of the Workers’ Party (PT), Janones assumed control of the digital strategy after the first round of voting. He utilized WhatsApp to build a massive digital presence, specifically through a channel known as ‘El ejército de Lula’ (Lula’s Army), which expanded from 60,000 to nearly 11 million followers. This strategy, referred to as ‘janonismo,’ focused on mobilizing followers to trend on social media and counter opposition narratives. Former Colombian President Gustavo Petro praised Janones on social media, calling him the ‘genius behind Lula’s victory’ for his effectiveness in mobilizing users against automated bot campaigns. Janones responded by expressing a commitment to joining forces with the global left to combat far-right movements in Latin America.
