Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been engaging in public activities involving her memoirs and an official portrait. In Bucharest, Romania, she presented the Romanian edition of her memoir, ‘Freedom. Memories 1954–2021’. In Berlin, the Bode-Museum has extended the exhibition of her official portrait by artist Jérémie Queyras until January 3, 2027, following high visitor interest. Merkel explained that she chose to wear a blue blazer in the painting to provide a ‘pop of color’ and to avoid using red, which she wished to leave for the first female Social Democratic chancellor. Recent activity at the Bode-Museum included a signing event where Merkel signed art postcards, postcards alongside Queyras, drawing significant crowds and long queues. Approximately 450 tickets were available for the session, with many pre-booked tickets selling out within hours. The exhibition has seen daily visitor numbers nearly double, rising from approximately 500 to 900. The portrait was created following a multi-year process involving roughly twenty sitting sessions. Observers have noted a resurgence in Merkel’s public visibility and popularity, characterized by growing nostalgia for her calm leadership style. Her 736-page autobiography, ‘Freiheit’, has sold over one million copies worldwide, and she has maintained a presence through viral social media appearances. A YouGov poll highlights this trend, revealing that 48 percent of Germans believe Merkel possesses ‘greater problem-solving competence’ for current crises than the incumbent CDU Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, while only 8 percent favor Merz over her in this comparison. This shift in public perception presents a political challenge for Merz as he attempts to establish a distinct conservative direction. The survey suggests growing dissatisfaction with the Merz administration, as political interest shifts toward the stability associated with Merkel’s 16-year tenure.
