Beninese singer and five-time Grammy Award winner Angélique Kidjo has officially received the 2,854th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Recording category. The ceremony, held on August 18, 2026, in Los Angeles, marks her as the first African musician and the first Black African performer to be recognized on the Hollywood boulevard. Kidjo Kidjo, 66, was joined at the event by notable figures including actor Willem Dafoe, actor Djimon Hounsou, and Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. During her acceptance speech, Kidjo highlighted the global impact of her continent’s sounds, stating, “Without us, there’s no music possible on this planet.” She further emphasized the collective nature of the achievement, remarking, “It’s not just my star, it’s our star.” She described the honor as a symbol of a world that functions as “one human family” regardless of origin or language, dedicating the distinction to Africa and the younger generation. In recognition of her achievements, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce also proclaimed August 18 as Angélique Kidjo Day. The honor celebrates Kidjo’s four-decade career blending West African traditions with jazz, funk, and R&B, as well as her humanitarian efforts.
