Animal-related vehicle collisions in Europe

Overview

Reports from Latvia and Croatia indicate a rise in vehicle collisions involving animals. In Latvia, BTA Baltic Insurance Company noted that approximately 10% of CASCO insurance claims during autumn are linked to wildlife, with nearly 1.9 million euros paid out over the last three autumn seasons. Data from September showed a 17% increase in such claims compared to the previous year, primarily involving large animals like moose, deer, and roe deer.

In Croatia, police in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County reported 44 incidents involving both wild and domestic animals over a two-week period, causing roughly 64,600 euros in damage. These incidents included collisions with deer, foxes, jackals, and wild boars, as well as domestic animals such as horses, dogs, and sheep. Authorities have advised motorists to exercise caution, particularly during morning hours, and noted that drivers may be held liable if they are traveling at inappropriate speeds during such encounters.
