Animal Rising activists Sandringham lamb theft convictions
Overview
Three activists from the group Animal Rising have been convicted of stealing three lambs from King Charles III’s Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. The incident, which occurred in May 2023, involved the activists crossing an electric fence to remove the animals, whom they named Sunny, Sammy, and Sooty.
During legal proceedings at Norwich Crown Court, the activists—Rosa Sharkey, Sarah Foy, and Rose Patterson—argued their actions constituted a “sheep open rescue” intended to prevent the animals from being sent to slaughter. Prosecutors dismissed this defense as “obvious nonsense,” characterizing the theft as a dishonest attempt to publicize the group's views. While the current location of the lambs remains undisclosed, court proceedings confirmed the animals are “alive and well” in a sanctuary.
Following a trial, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts. The three women were ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid community service each and received combined fines totaling just over £1,000.
