In late September 2026, animal welfare efforts in Romania transitioned from high-level strategic discussions to community-based engagement. The second edition of the Animal Summit România was scheduled for September 29 and 30 at the Cotroceni Palace. Organized by the Sache Association and the Bucharest Animal Protection and Supervision Authority, the summit focused on prevention as a primary solution for issues such as animal abandonment, uncontrolled breeding, and legislative enforcement. The event included participation from international organizations like the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) to share systemic strategies. Following the summit, activities shifted toward public celebrations for World Animal Day on October 4. In Rovinari, local authorities organized an adoption fair for dogs from the Rovinari Public Shelter, featuring a mobile veterinary clinic and educational activities. In Bucharest, events at Herăstrău Park included canine demonstrations and adoption fairs held in partnership with ASPA Bucharest and Ilfov County Animal Protection. Purina România hosted a ‘Roaba de Cultură’ event at the park, featuring an ASPA-organized adoption fair where ten dogs were seeking homes. In Sibiu, local police organized a community meeting at Sub Arini Park focused on animal protection, rights, and owner responsibilities. On October 4, coinciding with World Animal Day, the movement expanded into political activism. Over 70 non-governmental organizations and activists, led by the Federația Împreună pentru Animale, organized a large-scale protest in Bucharest. The demonstrators demanded significant legislative changes and criticized the state for spending millions of euros on euthanasia rather than national sterilization programs. Protesters highlighted issues including stray dog management, the lack of specific legislation for cats, and the legal status of pets, noting that they are still treated as property in Romania. Activists further emphasized that over 200,000 dogs have been euthanized in recent years and called for improved treatment of farm animals and wildlife.
