Animal welfare and containment issues in Cyprus and Greece

Following the escape of a bear from Melios Zoo Park in the Nicosia District on October 10, local authorities and police responded to the incident. The park owner located the animal near the zoo facilities and returned it to its enclosure, resolving the immediate threat to residents in Palaiometochos and surrounding areas.

In response to the escape, Cyprus Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner Elias Myrianthous has called for more systematic inspections of animal hosting facilities. The Commissioner noted that the Melios Zoo facility has previously faced judicial decisions regarding non-compliance with animal welfare laws. While the zoo owner stated that previous state inspections had not flagged safety or construction issues, veterinary services and police are investigating the circumstances of the escape.

Concurrently in Greece, the Communist Party (KKE) has submitted a formal inquiry to the Ministries of Environment and Agriculture concerning long-standing issues with unsupervised livestock and wild boars in Lefkada. For nearly 20 years, these animals have reportedly caused damage to crops, cemeteries, and increased road safety risks.
