The municipality of Nova Iguaçu has implemented several animal welfare and public health initiatives. Initially, the Municipal Secretariat for Animal Defense and Protection (SEMDEPA) organized an adoption campaign at TopShopping to find homes for vaccinated and dewormed dogs and cats. Following this, the city launched a multi-phase rabies vaccination campaign for dogs and cats over three months of age. The first phase of this campaign is scheduled to begin on Saturday, October 17, utilizing 46 service points across various neighborhoods. These points will operate from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. To ensure safety, officials advise that dogs be brought on leashes with muzzles if necessary, while cats should be transported in appropriate carriers. All animals must be accompanied by an adult. This effort, managed by the Subsecretariat of Health Surveillance and the Zoonosis Surveillance Nucleus, aims to prevent rabies and reduce transmission risks to humans. A second phase of the vaccination drive is scheduled for November 7. Recent developments confirm that Nova Iguaçu is proceeding with these efforts, including a pet adoption event at Shopping Nova Iguaçu featuring over 20 animals alongside the 46 vaccination service points. This work is part of broader regional initiatives in Brazil. In Manaus, the Municipal Health Secretariat (Semsa) has established 27 fixed vaccination points, including three units from the Zoonosis Control Center (CCZ) and 24 partner veterinary clinics. In Campo Grande, efforts include fixed points in Jardim Petrópolis and door-to-door visits in the Caiobá region, following the registration of the 14th positive rabies case in bats this year. In Várzea Grande, 20 vaccination posts have been established to increase coverage due to low immunization numbers. In Boa Vista, health teams are conducting door-to-door vaccinations in rural areas, specifically targeting the Nova Amazônia settlement. In Rio de Janeiro, the city is deploying 159 vaccination posts across the West Zone, aiming to increase the number of vaccinated animals by 20% compared to the previous year.
