Animal welfare initiatives in Portugal

Overview

Portuguese municipalities are implementing various initiatives to improve animal welfare and promote responsible pet ownership.

In late September, local governments focused on infrastructure upgrades. In Valença, a new Official Companion Animal Collection Center (CRO) was opened in Gandra, representing a 300,000 euro investment to accommodate approximately 60 dogs and cats. In Guimarães, the CRO in Aldão underwent a major expansion exceeding 1.3 million euros, doubling its capacity to house up to 124 dogs in improved facilities.

By early October, the focus shifted toward community engagement and awareness. Viseu organized the ‘Viseu Animal Amigo’ initiative, featuring walks, a book fair, and adoption spaces. Similarly, Amadora launched ‘Amadora Pet Friends 2026’, a month-long program including workshops, lectures, and walking events designed to promote animal well-being through family participation.

To mark World Animal Day on October 4, local efforts continued, specifically through the ‘Viseu Animal Amigo’ initiative at Santiago Urban Park. This event included a 3.5 km walk, an international German Shepherd dog competition, and dedicated adoption spaces to encourage responsible pet ownership.
