Anniversary of ABI headquarters bombing in Brazil

Overview

The Associação Brasileira de Imprensa (ABI) is marking the 50th anniversary of a bombing at its Rio de Janeiro headquarters. The attack occurred on August 19, 1976, during the Brazilian military dictatorship, specifically during the period of ‘distensão’ led by President Ernesto Geisel.

The explosion, which caused significant structural damage to offices and elevators but resulted in no injuries, was claimed by the far-right Aliança Anticomunista Brasileira (AAB). The group left a pamphlet accusing the association of being dominated by communists. On the same day, a separate explosive device was placed at the headquarters of the Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB), signaling a simultaneous effort by extremists to target the press and the legal profession.

To commemorate the anniversary, the ABI has released a special bulletin containing historical documents, including confidential reports from the National Information Service (SNI) that detailed political surveillance of the entity. The institution is holding commemorative acts to reaffirm its commitment to democracy and press freedom.
