Actor Anthony Hopkins is set to release his debut orchestral album, ‘Life Is a Dream’, on August 21 via Decca Records. The collection includes 12 compositions written over sixty years, drawing inspiration from his life experiences and childhood in Wales. The album was recorded in April at London’s Alexandra Palace, featuring the Philharmonia Orchestra under the direction of conductor Gustavo Dudamel. While Hopkins has previously composed scores for films such as ‘Shadowlands’, ‘August’, ‘Slipstream’, and ‘Elyse’, this project represents his first formal full-length orchestral album release. Hopkins has described music as his ‘first love’ and a primary vocation, having begun playing piano at age four and composing his first waltz in 1960. Recent details confirm the 88-year-old composer’s collaboration includes Argentine pianist Sergio Tiempo and Venezuelan cellist Gregorio Nieto. The album’s title is shared with a play by Spanish dramatist Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Specific tracks include ‘1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra: II. Bracken Road’, which reflects his Welsh upbringing, and ‘Stella Aria’, a piece dedicated to his wife, Stella Hopkins.
