Anthropic’s Claude AI model has demonstrated capabilities in biological discovery and protein design. In one instance, the AI identified a new family of biological molecules called array-associated reverse transcriptases (ARTs) found in bacteriophages. This discovery, which shares characteristics with the CRISPR gene-editing system, sparked debate among researchers regarding whether the AI identified the enzymes independently or utilized unpublished research previously shared with the model. Anthropic has denied that its models are trained on user transcripts. In a separate application, Anthropic conducted an exploratory protein-design campaign to generate minibinders for scorpion neurotoxins. During a 64-hour period, the AI generated over 318,000 designs, which were narrowed down to 318,484 designs targeting five specific neurotoxins from species in Mexico, Brazil, North Africa, and the Middle East. From these, 211 candidates were selected for laboratory testing. testing by Adaptyv Bio and Twist Bioscience—180 chosen by the AI and 31 by researchers. Results from contract research organizations showed that 17 of these designs met specific predefined binding criteria criteria, successfully targeting four of the five neurotoxins. Notably, the two strongest binders for neurotoxins the Cn2 toxin from regions including Mexico, Brazil, North Africa, and Mexico demonstrated high binding affinities in the Middle East. Anthropic clarified that while these single-digit nanomolar range. While researchers described the results show promise as a significant milestone for early AI-assisted drug discovery, they do emphasized that these proteins are not constitute a functional antivenom. yet antivenoms; the study confirmed physical attachment to toxins but did not test for neutralization of venom effects in living organisms or evaluate safety.
