Anthropic Claude Fable 5 development and adoption

Anthropic has implemented technical updates to its Claude Fable 5 model to enhance biology-related safeguards. By refining safety classifiers and training data, the company reduced biology-related fallbacks by 85%, aiming to mitigate dual-use risks while allowing for more effective use in clinical and educational contexts.

Despite these technical refinements, the company is encountering adoption challenges. Data from the payments group Ramp, collected from 70,000 businesses, indicates that corporate spending on the Fable 5 model has plateaued at approximately 11% of total enterprise tool revenue. Analysts suggest businesses are increasingly opting for cheaper, more efficient alternatives rather than paying the premium for frontier models. Fable 5 is noted as one of the most expensive models on the market, costing $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Many enterprises have found that older or less powerful models, such as Opus 4.8 or Opus 5, are sufficient for most routine tasks.

This shift in spending patterns raises questions regarding the long-term business models of frontier AI companies that rely on massive investments for training increasingly large models. While Anthropic has seen significant growth, its July revenue of $65 billion on an annualized basis fell short of the $80 billion projected by investors ahead of a potential IPO. The company is currently preparing for a potential initial public offering with a projected valuation of up to $2 trillion, though the sluggish adoption of its most advanced model and a previous temporary restriction by the Trump administration due to national security concerns present ongoing hurdles.
