Anthropic election information integration
Overview
In preparation for the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, Anthropic announced plans to integrate official voting information into its Claude AI chatbot. The company intended to provide users with state-specific details, such as polling locations and identification requirements, by incorporating data from Democracy Works. Anthropic also implemented new political-bias evaluations and systems to detect coordinated attempts to misuse its models for deceptive political campaigns or voter fraud.
Following these preparations, Anthropic entered into its first content and data licensing agreement with the Associated Press. This deal, reportedly struck just before the midterm elections, allows Claude to provide real-time election information and polling data attributed to the AP. This move represents a strategic shift for the company, which had previously maintained that scraping content fell under fair use.
