Antigua and Barbuda is preparing to host the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) from November 1–4. The summit, themed ‘Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth’, aims to bring together leaders from 56 nations to discuss climate finance, energy transition, digital technology, and reparatory justice. King Charles III is expected to attend. Preparations for the event include the launch of a new investment platform by the Commonwealth Secretariat featuring approximately US$30 billion in potential projects. To manage the large-scale gathering, security services will be augmented by international support, such as the Cayman Islands Regiment, and authorities have established controlled security zones that may require local residents to relocate or stay indoors. Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who will assume the Commonwealth chairmanship during the conference, described the summit as a ‘defining moment’ for the nation. However, the summit has caused domestic logistical challenges, as resources from National Housing and Public Works were diverted to support summit-related infrastructure, leading to delays in local road and drainage improvements. Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez is utilizing the summit to promote the nation’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) market. Designated venues for the event include the American University of Antigua, the Sir John E. St. Luce Finance and Conference Centre, and the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus.
