Recent episodes of the ZDF treasure hunting program ‘Bares für Rares’ have featured the sale of several high-value antique jewelry items. In one instance, a late 19th-century rose gold bracelet featuring an opal cabochon and seed pearls was sold for 750 euros. The piece reportedly has a history involving a flight from Silesia, where it was allegedly smuggled to the West inside a shoe heel. An expert valued the item between 900 and 1,100 euros. Other notable sales include a heavy 175-gram gold bracelet set with eight amethyst cabochons, which fetched 12,500 euros. A diamond ring, described by its sellers as a ‘small Mercedes’ due to its high historical value, sold for nearly 10,000 euros; the piece was crafted by goldsmith Schott before 1974. An antique Egyptian-inspired gold bracelet with a Nile crocodile design also drew significant interest from dealers. While one seller previously exceeded her price expectations with a similar motif, the program has also seen items fail to meet seller demands, such as a century-old musical clock stand that sold for only 150 euros. More recently, a 750 gold bracelet with a wave motif and small diamonds was sold for 4,100 euros. Brought by Reiner Braun as a family heirloom from his wife’s grandfather, the piece was identified as being made in Valenza, Italy, by goldsmith Luciano Cavezzali around the late 1950s or 1960. Although the market value was appraised between 4,200 and 4,600 euros, a compromise price was reached during negotiations. In another segment, Cologne carnival singer Hannes Blum presented a gold bracelet featuring a 67-carat aquamarine stone, reportedly once belonging to Hollywood legend Johnny Weissmuller. Newer segments have expanded to include diverse collections, such as a mother and daughter’s diamond jewelry featuring an Art Deco ring from the late 1930s.
