French authorities and the Grenoble prosecutor's office have launched an investigation into a business owner at the Les Deux Alpes ski resort following a viral video. In the clip, the manager of a refreshment stall at ‘L’Alpette’ was recorded telling an Orthodox Jewish tourist, “The Jewish community, you are too many! [...] At some point, it exceeds people.” The victim, Elie Sultan, expressed shock at the encounter, noting he has frequented the station for years without such treatment. The incident drew condemnation from Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, who described the remarks as an “unacceptable attack on the values of the Republic,” and Aurore Bergé, the minister responsible for fighting discrimination, who requested the Isère prefect report the matter to the public prosecutor. The case is being investigated as potential public provocation of hatred or violence based on religion or origin. The event has surfaced broader tensions in Alpine resorts regarding the presence of Orthodox Jewish communities. While some local residents and business owners expressed grievances concerning the concentration of kosher services and perceived integration issues—with some claiming the situation is “blown out of proportion”—Jewish tourists have reported feeling unwelcome. Some families have reported additional instances of harassment, including verbal abuse directed at children wearing kippot. Éric Hattab, president of CRIF Grenoble-Dauphiné, questioned whether there is a “quota of Jews admitted into the mountains.” Following the investigation, the restaurant manager is scheduled to stand trial in Grenoble on March 2, 2027. The merchant is being prosecuted for “public discriminatory insult against an individual based on their religion.” During the investigation, the manager admitted to making the statements, and authorities noted that the individual filming the exchange did not provoke the remarks.
