Following Italy’s 2-0 defeat to Belgium in their UEFA Nations League opener, coach Roberto Mancini has faced increased scrutiny. While legend Dino Zoff previously noted the squad appeared hesitant, Zoff has since expressed confidence in Mancini despite describing a ‘dark period’ for the national team. Mancini has acknowledged that Italian football is in a period of renewal, noting the current generation lacks the depth of past talents like Totti or Del Piero. In the Nations League third round, Italy secured a 1-1 draw against France at the Stade de France. Mancini praised the team’s collective effort, stating they “defended and attacked as a team” to maintain a strong performance. This period of on-field progress, which includes a 4-1 victory against Turkey, has occurred despite significant administrative instability within the Italian football federation (FIGC). This youth-focused strategy has evolved into a significant generational renewal. During his second cycle as head coach, Mancini has debuted 64 players across 64 matches to build a long-term project. This shift was exemplified in a recent match against France in Paris, where the starting eleven recorded an average age of approximately 24 to 25 years—nearly three years younger than the squad used in the qualifying playoff against Bosnia. Mancini is utilizing a 4-3-3 formation to integrate new talents such as Antonio Vergara, Michael Kayode, Sebastiano Esposito, Issa Doumbia, and Pio Esposito. Midfielder Nicolò Fagioli has ~~also~~ emerged as a key figure, with Mancini comparing his technical ability to Marco Verratti. Following a victory against Turkey in Bursa, Fagioli was assigned the number 10 jersey. Amidst this rebuilding, Nicolò Barella noted that the squad is working to “regain the trust of Italian fans” and restore enthusiasm following a period of adjustment. The team is now preparing for upcoming matches against France and Belgium in Milan.
