Jarret Tenebe, the Edo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), issued threats against individuals attempting to obstruct the party’s goal of securing 2.5 million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. During campaign rallies held as Governor Monday Okpebholo toured the 18 Local Government Areas of Edo State, Tenebe was recorded in a viral video using aggressive rhetoric. He threatened to invoke the ‘power of AK-47’ and the ‘General Purpose Machine Gun’ spirit against those standing in the way of the party’s objectives, contrasting these with the ‘heavier’ invocation of ‘Holy Ghost fire.’ Tenebe argued that the volume of votes a state provides to the Federal Government can impact its development prospects, including the potential creation of new states or local government areas. He dismissed critics and opposition members who questioned the feasibility of the 2.5 million vote target, noting that the governor had previously mobilized over 2.1 million votes during recent local government elections. Following these remarks in Benin City, Tenebe has faced significant backlash. He has defended his comments while expressing personal hostility toward Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The inflammatory rhetoric has raised concerns regarding voter intimidation and potential breaches of the Constitution and the Electoral Act, prompting calls for investigations by the police and the Department of State Services (DSS).
