APEC regional energy and infrastructure cooperation

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) members have engaged in discussions regarding technical standards and energy security within the region.

In Dalian, China, representatives from government and corporate sectors met to discuss harmonizing electric vehicle (EV) charging standards. The discussions focused on reducing inefficiencies caused by discrepancies in connectors, testing, and certification, with proposals to unify testing methods and strengthen the mutual recognition of conformity assessment results.

Subsequently, APEC energy ministers met in Beijing and issued a joint statement pledging to enhance energy security and supply chain resilience. In response to rising crude oil prices and electricity demands from artificial intelligence infrastructure, ministers agreed to establish a task force to integrate energy planning with AI development. The ministers also recommended increasing nuclear and renewable energy use to address rising power needs and the expansion of data centers.
